چکیده

2014 Optical microscopy reveals regular periodic undulations of the lateral position of the axes of paired disclinations or « oily streaks » in thin, fully hydrated lyotropic liquid crystals of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) in the L03B1 (smectic A) phase. These undulations explain the characteristic dark bands that traverse the paired disclinations on observation with crossed polarizers. When paired disclinations are adjacent, their undulation periods become equal and lock in phase. The undulations appear spontaneously in all paired disclinations on formation of homeotropically aligned specimens in the L03B1 phase. J. Physique 45 (1984) 273-281 FTVRIER 1984, ]

Self-alignment of dye molecules in micelles and lamellae for three-dimensional imaging of lyotropic liquid crystals.

We report alignment of anisotropic amphiphilic dye molecules within oblate and prolate anisotropic micelles and lamellae, the basic building blocks of surfactant-based lyotropic liquid crystals. Absorption and fluorescence transition dipole moments of these dye molecules orient either parallel or orthogonal to the liquid crystal director. This alignment enables three-dimensional visualization o...

Evolution of disclinations in cholesteric liquid crystals.

We studied the evolution of defect lines (oily streaks) in cholesteric liquid crystals. In contrast to nematic liquid crystals, there were no interactions between the defect lines in cholesteric liquid crystals. We observed experimentally that individual open defect segments shrank with time with a linear relation, and individual defect loops shrank with time with a square root relation. We als...

Structural and Thermomechanical Investigation of Lyotropic Liquid Crystal Phases Doped with Monodisperse Microparticles

We present a study of the structural and thermomechanical properties of lyotropic phase in the quasi ternary system made of Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPCl)/hexanol/salt water (0.9 % by mass) with and without cobalt microparticles. Phase transition temperatures of the structural sequence isotropic L 1/nematic calamitic Nc ,/hexagonal H have been determined by differential scanning microcalorimet...

Optical trapping of director structures and defects in liquid crystals using laser tweezers.

We demonstrate optical manipulation of structures and defects in liquid crystals (LCs). The effective refractive index depends on the LC molecular orientations and the laser beam's polarization. We use the orientation-mediated refractive index contrast for the laser trapping in LCs with a homogeneous composition, but with spatially-varying patterns of molecular orientations. Tightly-focused pol...

Persistence of Smectic-A Oily Streaks into the Nematic Phase by UV Irradiation of Reactive Mesogens

Thin smectic liquid crystal films with competing boundary conditions (planar and homeotropic at opposing surfaces) form well-known striated structures known as “oily streaks”, which are a series of hemicylindrical caps that run perpendicular to the easy axis of the planar substrate. The streaks vanish on heating into the nematic phase, where the film becomes uniform and exhibits hybrid alignmen...
